Gahat Ka Shorba / Horsegram Soup is a delicious dish from Himachal Pradesh that needs only 12 ingredients and few minutes to make!
Shorba is generally an Indian style soup, that is generally brothy in texture. There are many different kinds of Shorba that are made in different part of India. Gahat ka shorba is from Himachal Pradesh, and it is made from lentil called Gahat or Horsegram. This lentil has a distinct flavor, color, and texture when compared to other lentils.
What makes Gahat Ka Shorba so special?
When I first made this, I was not sure how the flavors would work, how it would taste, and it’s muddy color did add up, but surprise! surprise!! it was delicious! This is such a perfect recipe for a cold winter because it makes us feel so cozy. It is also very healthy because of the spices we add to this recipe.
Gahat Ka Shorba / Horsegram Soup recipe:
Serves 4
- Oil – 1 tbsp
- Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
- Hing – a pinch
- Gahat/Horsegram – 1/4 cup
- Coriander seeds – crushed – 2 tbsp
- Ginger paste – 1/2 tbsp
- Garlic paste – 1/2 tbsp
- Salt -1 Tsp
- Pepper powder – 1/4 tsp
- Cilantro stems – minced – 1/4 cup*
- Onion – minced – 1/4 cup
- First pressure cook Gahat, water, coriander seeds, ginger paste, garlic paste, salt, pepper powder, coriander stems, minced onions for 15-20 minutes or as per the pressure cooker instructions.
- Once done, remove the mixture from the pressure cooker.
- After that pass the mixture through a sieve, into a clean bowl.
- Later, place a small seasoning pan on medium heat.
- Next, add oil into the pan.
- Once the oil is hot, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing.
- Next, add the seasoning to the liquid, mix everything well.
- Lastly, serve warm and enjoy!
*Originally, for this recipe cilantro stems are used. Since it is not common for us to find cilantro roots, I have replaced it with cilantro stems. These stems are the bottom part of the cilantro bundle where there are not many leaves.
