This recipe Dal Tadka is a Punjabi style lentil recipe which is warm, delicious, comfort, healthy food which is perfect any day and it is so easy to make!
When we talk about lentils, in particular, about tuvar dal / tuvar dal, I can say, it is cooked in almost every household. Everyone has their own way of seasoning it. Punjab is known for so many famous dishes around the world like tikka masala, naan etc, among all the delicious dishes, this is another flavor bomb from the same state!
What makes Punjabi Style Seasoned lentils so special?
Along with flavors, this is also a dish which is so easy to make. It can be made on a weekday or a weekend because there is barely any preparation for this dish, it is completely customizable. It is a dish which is good for the entire family. That’s why it is one of my favorites.
Dal tadka / Punjabi Style Seasoned lentils recipe:
Serves 3-4
- Tuval dal / Toor dal – 1 cup*
- Water – 2 cup + more as required
- Ginger garlic paste – 1 tbsp
- Turmeric – 3/4 tsp
- Salt – 1/2 tsp or to taste
- Oil or ghee – 2 tbsp
- Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
- Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
- Hing / Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp
- Green chilies – minced – 1/2 tsp or more as desired.
- Onions – chopped small – 1/2 cup
- Tomatoes – chopped small – 1/2 cup
- Coriander powder – 1 tsp
- Sugar – a pinch
- Cilantro – minced – 2 tbsp (optional)
- Pressure cook tuvar dal along with 2 cups of water, ginger garlic paste, turmeric, and salt.**
- Next, remove the cooked lentils from pressure cooker once it is safe and mash it with a ladle.
- After that place a pot on low – medium heat.
- Later add ghee/oil into the pot and let it warm up.
- Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing.
- Let them fry for 30-40 seconds until mustard splutters.
- After that add green chilies, onions and let them fry till translucent.
- Next, add tomatoes and fry till they are soft.
- Now add cooked and mashed lentils, mix everything well, add some more water if the mixture is too thick.
- Next, let it come to a boil.
- Taste it and add more salt if required.
- Lastly, add sugar and cilantro leaves, mix everything well and take it off heat.
- Serve hot with fresh rice or roti.
*Generally, tuvar dal and masoor dal are combined and cooked in this recipe with half and half proportions. Since I didn’t have masoor dal on hand, I used tuvar dal completely.
