There are different kinds of lentils which are used in India. The lentils are main source of protein. Hence it becomes an important part of the meal. I will be giving you information about different lentils, about its nutrition etc very soon. And mostly all lentils are cooked in the same way. Now I want to tell you the general methods of cooking lentils.
Generally lentils are cooked in pressure cooker or boiling it on stove in water. I know many of you may or many not use pressure cooker. I tried doing these few ways.
- Using the lentil in powdered form : Take a cup of lentil and dry fry it in the pan for around 2 mins on medium heat. Just till the dal becomes warm and place it into a blender. Now make it into fine powder and keep it aside. Then take 2 cups of water into a pan and put it on medium heat. By the time water is coming to a boil, mix 1-1.5 cups of water into the lentil powder very carefully in a way that it doesn’t form lumps. Once the water comes to boil, add this lentil-water mixture to the water and stir immediately, else lumps will form. After 1-2 mins the entire mixture becomes thick and we have the cooked lentil.
- Using the rice cooker : Place 1 cup of lentil in rice cooker and pour 3 cups of water. Then let the rice cooker do its work. Once all water is gone remove the cooked dal and put it into the blender and blend it with some water till it becomes a smooth paste.
- Using a pressure cooker : I use an electric pressure cooker. I put 1 cup of dal and put 3 cups of water. I put it on high pressure mode for 18 minutes and once that time is done it cooks beautifully and then I mash the dal with a spoon.
- Cooking on stove : Personally I don’t like this method because of the amount of time it takes. For this we have to add little more water. Initially we need to add 3 cups of water and 1 cup of dal. But depending on the consistency of the dal we may need to add more water.
